This book contains case examples of 300 vibrant SMEs nationwide with original, high-level technology, mainly in core industries including die and mold, metal-casting and forging, and plating. The data were compiled from published data that were collected through the Regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry nationwide as well as the networks of the Organization for Small and Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, Japan, the Shoko Chukin Bank, and the Japan Finance Corporation for Small and Medium Enterprise. The 300 SMEs were selected based on discussions in the Subcommittee for Discussion on Case Examples “300 Monodzukuri SMEs Nationwide” (Chair: Hiroyuki Itami, Professor at the Graduate School of Commerce and Management, Hitotsubashi University established in the Business Support Committee, Small and Medium Enterprise Policy-Making Council. They were selected from various perspectives, such as their technical capabilities, the influence of their technologies on peoples’ lives and economic activities, as well as the degree of contribution of such technologies to their business and to the international community. There are many SMEs with high-level technologies whose technical capabilities are not disclosed in the form of published data. Since this book has been compiled based on limited data that have been collected through the above networks, the SMEs listed in this book should be considered as no more than a handful of the numerous monodzukuri SMEs that support the future of Japan. |
